The Horse of Marken: A Symbol of Resilience Guide

The "Horse of Marken" (Paard van Marken) is a prominent lighthouse located on the eastern side of the island of Marken. More than just a navigational aid, it stands as a symbol of the island's resilience against the forces of nature and its enduring maritime heritage. Its picturesque setting and distinctive design make it a popular landmark for visitors. The original lighthouse was built in 1839, but it was destroyed by a storm in 1916. The current lighthouse, constructed in 1917, is a testament to the islanders' determination to maintain a vital beacon for ships navigating the Markermeer. Its red and white stripes make it easily recognizable, and its light has guided countless vessels safely through the waters. While you cannot enter the lighthouse itself, the area surrounding it offers stunning views of the Markermeer and the surrounding landscape. It's a perfect spot for taking photographs and enjoying the tranquility of the island. You can walk along the dike to reach the lighthouse, taking in the fresh sea air and observing the local flora and fauna. The lighthouse is a great starting point for exploring the eastern side of Marken. As for culinary experiences, Marken offers traditional Dutch seafood dishes in its local restaurants.
